I build campus audiences and turn them into revenue.

I founded College Connect, an independent network of 26 Class of 2031 Instagram pages, and built the platform that runs it: per-school storefronts, Stripe checkout, and an admin CMS that calculates revenue splits for my team of eight. The 2024-25 cycle did $102K in revenue.

College Connect

Independent, student-run class-page network · Iowa City, IA

It started as students DMing me a photo and a bio and paying over Venmo. I turned that into a company: an independent, student-run network of 26 Class of 2031 Instagram pages with 400K+ lifetime followers, where incoming freshmen meet their class before move-in. I hired, trained, and manage the team of eight who run the pages day to day. The 2024-25 cycle did $101,810 against a $100K goal. The network is not affiliated with any university.

I run the flagship, @uiowa_2031 (verified, about 12K followers), and I designed the network's page templates, story frames, and carousels so all 26 pages stay consistent.

I also took the business off Venmo and DMs by building its platform end to end. Students now submit their features through a per-school storefront with Stripe checkout, my managers approve posts from their own dashboards, and each manager's revenue split is calculated automatically. It is live at collegeconnecthq.com.

The Summit & Frank's

Client work for one owner · Iowa City, IA

The owner of The Summit, an Iowa City nightclub open since 2001, hired me to run its marketing, then handed me his new restaurant and bar, Frank's Filling Station. At The Summit I shoot and edit the short-form video and design the flyers for weekly events and specials. A blind-pour challenge reel I made reached 135K views on TikTok and 100K on Instagram, and the Iowa vs. Ohio State gameday promo drew 41K Instagram views.

For Frank's, I built the brand from zero ahead of opening: the logo system, launch and hiring posts, story and highlight covers, a logo sting, and a website I designed and built. The building was a 1948 Amoco station, so the brand borrows from the signage and print of that era.

Welcome Week & Plugged University

Welcome Week USA · Plugged University · New York, NY

I promote nationwide entertainment events (concerts, festivals, and large-scale parties) through talent outreach and booking, digital ad campaigns, and influencer partnerships for @pluggeduniversity, an events brand with 168K+ followers. Most recently I ran Iowa Welcome Week end to end: two ticketed 18+ nights at The Summit in Iowa City that sold 1,564 tickets. I designed every promo video, hired the staff and DJs, managed the equipment, and built the promoter team.

The campaign shipped 25+ promo cuts, and I tested every one on non-followers with Instagram Trial Reels before scaling the winners. The early-bird tier sold out, and prices stepped up at every tier.

PayMore Coralville

Electronics buy, sell, and trade store · Coralville, IA

I ran short-form video for a store that buys and resells used tech, and delivered a 27-video slate that looks like one brand: authentication explainers, price-guessing hooks, storefront tours, and offer cards. Every video rendered from a design system I wrote in code, so the whole slate stayed consistent without hand-rebuilding a single post.

Beyond the videos, I wrote the store's LinkedIn B2B plan and designed a laptop giveaway, with a retention plan for keeping the audience after the prize ships.

All built from one design system in code, with captions timed to every spoken word.

Approval-first scheduling

A tool I built so nothing reaches a corporate account without a human sign‑off.

The content itself

Reels I shot, cut, and produced for clients, plus the personal edits I make for fun.

I shoot and edit in Premiere Pro and After Effects, and build the templated pieces in code with Remotion. My personal edits, posted under @xjohnk, are where I practice new cuts and pacing before they show up in client work.

How I work

Strategy, content, and the systems underneath. Doing all three means nothing gets lost in a handoff.

Strategy that starts with the audience

Positioning, content slates, and reach mechanics built around how a platform actually distributes, not around a posting calendar. I test ideas on non-followers before spending them on the core audience.

Content I make myself

Shooting, editing, motion graphics, and copy. Being able to cut the thing I planned means the idea survives contact with the timeline, and the turnaround is often same‑day.

Systems so it scales

I build the tooling underneath: the College Connect platform (storefronts, Stripe checkout, manager dashboards) and an approval-first scheduler for a retail client's social posts.

About

Marketing student, operator, and the person cutting the footage.

I'm a marketing student at the University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business, and I've spent the last three years running a business alongside it.

What I keep coming back to is the gap between people who plan campaigns and people who can make them. I started College Connect because students wanted to be seen by their class and nobody had built the place for it. I learned to edit because briefing an editor was slower than cutting it myself. I learned to code because scheduling posts across every class page by hand was eating the week.

The through-line is the same one I'd bring to a team: figure out what the audience actually wants, make the thing, measure whether it worked, and build the system so it happens again next week without heroics.

I graduate in May 2027 and I'm looking for full-time marketing, brand, and growth roles starting June 2027.
